The flute solo composition ”Sobbing flower” was composed originally in the begging of 1990s.The keynote was based on Suzhou Pingdiao(Fair Tone),with the historical background of “Daiyu interring fallen flowers” in the Chinese traditional novel of “The dreams of red manors” and the fundamental materials of Southern China composition ,showing a tragic scene of “separated people with fallen dead flowers”.

The composer is Zhang Weiliang, a distinguished music instrument player of flute ,who is also the director of instrument department in China Music Institute .Besides he also take the occupation of the Flute Association's headfigure of China Musician Association and the teacher of the bind actor Maodi's ,who works in the China Handicapped Art association.

“Sobbing Flower “ just like a story written for Maodi,who took the exam for China Music Institute in the year 2000.Never before had this university accepted blind student. Mr. came across a really knotty problem. He hesitated in whether accept this special student or not .After hearing the “Sobbing Flowers” played by Mao ,Mr. Zhang said to him excitedly:” You are sure to be my student.” As a result , Mao became an auditor in that university, but as a blind person in an institute where braille papers were not offered, he had difficulty in solving the problem of retaining his student status. He was recommended by Zhang on the conference of the national educational bureau to play the composition of ‘Sobbing Flowers”, and later rewarded the compliment of all the leaders as well as the artists at present. The leaders of the educational bureau commented that” Such genius is so rear, we have to retain his student status because there is special way to solve a special case.” As a matter of fact Mao succeeded in taking a bachelor's degree.

As a traditional movement, there is plenty of portray for sceneries. Few concerns the description of people's feeling in their heart ocean. “One who play Sobbing Flower” well should reach the acme of perfection. Mao's performance can hijacks the audience's attention deeply because of his personnel experience . It a well expound of a perfect mixture of nature and self consciousness.

Mao said to the newsmen: ”I play that composition with deep emotion each time .'Sobbing Flowers' can be divided into four chapters,' the prelude',' slow tone',' quick tone', 'the coda'. The prelude is gentle with symphony of autumn, it is a drain of your personnel experience, in which way you can be surrounded by a tragic atmosphere;' the slow tone' is possessed with the true spirit of music with the piano accompaniment of Jin Yuanhui(also a blind pianist in China Handicapped Art Group).After the performance the spirit can be found in every chapter. The sound of flute just like buried in the sand compared with the sound of piano like wind. The wind blows, the flute sings, all merged in the beauty of the music, Gone with the memories far away and endless and sigh with emotion. 'the quick tone ‘adapts the technique of ‘quick pace ,slow rhythm of singing.' when playing ,a feeling of excitement and fresh in your heart will take full possession of your heart. When it comes to the cutting point, it suddenly stops .We, Yuanhui and I, can't see each other. It's with our pace of breath that we continue to the subsequent part, pushing our emotions to the solitary top ,bright and sonorous.' the coda' is similar to the prelude. It's the reappear of the prelude. The slow pace of the coda is as gentle as the feeling of flowers touching your face, creating an atmosphere of “separated people with fallen dead flowers”.

After the performance, the most impressive feeling of Mao is that to seek the significance of life with a grateful heart. The former director of music instrument department Liu Dehai said that Mao's performance is full of deep emotions. I can read from it of the understanding of fate and loving of life. It deserves the classical piece of the flute composition just like “a couple of streams reflects the moon”, a composition needs to kneel to listen.

Besides ,he can also play some other instruments like “Sun”, ”Pipe”, ”Koudi”, ”Hulusi”, ”Bawu”, ”Paixiao”,”Chi”,”Clarinet”,”Chiba”.

Now ,he is the group leader of the China Handicapped Art Group, also member of the Flute Branch of the China National Orchestral Music Association.

Talented apprentice cultivated by Famous Teacher

The experience of going on with his further study in China Music Institute is an unforgettable one for Mao Di. He said” I'm grateful to my headteacher Songfei, because she treats every in the class equal, me included. Alough she is the chief erhu player in China , she never goes about with her head in the air. She is kid and amiable, and she encouraged Mao to participate in all the activities organized by the class.”He also said that he will never forget the day when he got registered in this university. Song took his hands to go for a stroll on every corner of the campus and told him that it takes much for an art major to achieve success. You have to suffer the feeling of lonely and know how to be a true man first .

With the encouragement of his teacher, Mao worked harder. He has translated two big boxes of text from the printed word to Braille ever since Sep. 2000.After the handing out of each text book, reference book or test paper, he would like his classmates to read it for him and he himself did the work of translation. Those handful of translation and notes won all the teachers' compliment.

Even at this key university,, Mao remained to be an excellent one ,he got “A”s in almost all the subjects. He has filmed two records already and now is working for the third one.

“In my years' wok of teaching ,the most excellent and unforgetable students is Mao Di.” said Lu Jinshan, professor of Tianjin Music Institute .Mao was once a student of his for ten years before entering China Music Institute ,their relationship have never stopped.

“Mao is a genius. Although he is blind, he has never freed himself from the hard work because of handicap physically.” Zhang Weiliang ,who is the tutor teacher of Mao in China Culture Institute. He said Mao holds a high standard for himself both in life and at work, such is the reason for his final achievement.

In Mar.2004,Mao Di became a professional actor in China Handicapped Art Organization. Within the transient three months, he has invited many countries and received tremendous warm welcome. ”I have set up a ‘flavor group' with some other players, specialized in playing traditional movements.” It's his experience in Korea that made him unforgettable. After the performance of some traditional Chinese songs, they gave the audience of Koreans a great gift ----the playing of “Ali Lang” by Chinese traditional instruments ,which is originally a Korean folk song. When the sound shed from the Chinese oldest instrument with the rhythm of Korean folk, all the people at present cheered with excitement .The continuing clap pulled us back from the curtain call.

“Although I have no sight, I can feel the atmosphere. After the whole performance, we were trapped by the crowd, the sound of cheering like tides roaring.” said Mao excitedly.

Dad's expectation

Playing flute is an energy-consuming task. But Mao ,who is now 23 (in the year 2004) has specialized in this ‘Physical Activity' for 15 years. He has to put his hands on his teacher's waist and stomach due to lack of vision, to observe the change of breath when playing. He listened to the tape once and once again because he couldn't read the score of music, trying to remember each music note by heart.

“we cannot survive without a heart of tolerance. I could only produce noise the first time I played.”

In order not to interrupting his neighbors, he had to play in the toilet in the winter and park in the summer. After practicing thousands of times, the old lady—his neighbor said that his playing is not a source of noise any more.

Years of practicing, boring as it was ,he never got tired about of it. What's more, he said that he has got a good name, which pushing him on the way to success. ”Di”, which means “a sharp arrow” in Chinese, can encourage him to conquer all the hardships.

Sowing the seed of Chinese folk music

Even when talked about his experience of unexpected blindness ,he said in a relaxed tone” One will get one thing after he lose another. I've lost my sight, but have got a sharper sense of hearing than ordinary people.” The god is fair, he has closed a door for Mao while opened another.

“He has amazing memory. His ears like hooks, can hook every thing he has heard.” said Ma Tao ,who was a former classmate of him when in Tianjin . He is also blind, but he has to hold his arms in approval of his “Kongfu of hearing”. Even it's an totally unknown composition, Mao can write the music score down after hearing it for two or three times.

Up till now, Mao has memorized hundreds of compositions in his heart, bur whenever it comes to unknown ones ,he is sure to listen to it once and once again and try to take it down.” You will be slow in mind if you don't use your brain and ears often.” said Mao.

Ever since the enrollment in China Handicapped Art Association in Mar.2004,he has visited many areas and countries in the world, namely Brunei , Korea , Taiwan , and U.S.A. In the following half year he will visit Turkey , Greece , Egypt , Switzerland , Denmark and France . He joked on himself that he is now a man running aroung the world, yet he takes delight in it. He said he is lucky, succeeded in getting his ideal job .But it's not an end ,he will work even harder to sow the seed of Chinese folk music all over the world.
