People with disabilities are the most vulnerable among the disadvantaged groups, accounting for 1/10 of the total population in the world.
SPECIAL ART, is a new phrase used to describe the art form performed by people with disabilities since the late 20th century. It is a new blossoming in the performing art.
Non-fiction film is a new category of film, which came into existence and grew gradually in accompanying the development of film art in recent years.
The China Disabled People¡¯s Performing Art Troupe has witnessed an uncommon development in 20 years. Bearing the dreams of people with disabilities, it created a masterpiece of SPECIAL ART entitled ¡°My Dream¡±, and traveled to more than 40 countries on five continents. It is herewith referred to as ¡°Messenger of Beauty and Humanity¡±, ¡°Torch Bearer for SPECIAL ART¡± as well as ¡°Ambassador for People with Disabilities in the World¡±.
The China Beijing Film Academy is the most prominent film school of its kind in China, the largest in Asia£¬and a well-known institution of higher learning in the art of film in the world. It is equipped with rich teaching resources, and a wide rang of educational specialities within an advanced professional facility. As well, it has an affiliation with the Beijing Youth Film Studio as its base of scientific research and practice.
II Genre & Content
This 90 minutes long film belongs to the non-fiction film category. It includes a 35mm print and Hi-Def digital version. The film, with the China Disabled People¡¯s Performing Art Troupe as its creative source, utilizes a modern film medium with the most advanced film techniques in presenting the beauty of SPECIAL ART. It captivates the art, the spirit and the life of the performers with disabilities, through a special visual angle, a freshly expressive form and creative film language.
III Features
The film was screened by an elite group of individuals within the China Beijing Film Academy. It involved all the relevant resources of the four Academy¡¯s departments of fine arts, directors, cinema photographers, and sound recorders, as well as a digital technic research institution. Having accumulated international experience, combined with the knowledge, wisdom and capabilities of the group, they have created the film with a new artistic conception.
Special Performing Form
All of the 88 performers and people offering narration & dubbing have disabilities. Among them, some cannot see, some cannot hear and speak, and some are physically disabled. They present themselves through a unique art form on the stage, and in life in a sincere and innate way.
Unique Style
Besides the traditional film language, the film also adopts mediums such as sign language by the hearing and speaking impaired, dubbing by the hearing impaired, narration by the visually impaired, as well as body language by the physically disabled. It tells the stories of yesterday, the life of today, and the colorful dreams of tomorrow through their poems in sign language, dances, songs, music, and opera.
New Screening Techniques
With ingenious integration of the stage, and out-of stage performances, the audience is guided to enjoy the film. The SPECIAL ART is performed by individuals with disabilities, which gives insight into their beautiful lives. It becomes evident how they see light in darkness, and hear sound and rhythms in silence; despite disabilities, they pursue perfection; in an uncertain yet beautiful world, they strive to be elevated.
